Norway

Bergen, Odda, Geiranger, Trollstigen, Andalsnes, Trondheim, Oslo

Our 10 Day Itinerary

Norway is a country we've been wanting to visit for a few years now. It seems a little overwhelming when trying to plan a trip to Norway, as there are so many sights to see, and as we have discovered, unless you have multiple weeks, you just won't be able to see it all. For example, we kept seeing things to see in the Lofoten Islands, an area up North, but given the distance, we opted to save that for a future visit.

There are many hikes that we wanted to try to do while in Norway, and a lot of them take up pretty much a full day, slowing down the pace of travel a bit. We picked the 2nd week of June to begin our trip, but would recommend waiting perhaps one or two more weeks. Once we started planning the details, we realized we were right on the edge of the season. One of the most famous hikes, the Romsdalseggen Ridge, may or may not be doable, as the shuttle between towns for this one way hike doesn't start running until a week after our visit.

Currency and Language

Norway has its own currency, called the Norwegian Krone, abbreviated with NOK when listed out for the price of things. Right now, we have a pretty easy calculation to compare prices to the USD, as 10 NOK is almost exactly 1 USD. Norway does not advertise any prices in other currencies, such as the Euro, even though in such close proximity to the EU. Norway has voted not to join the European Union, and thus not to use the Euro. They are a member of the EEA, European Economic Area, which helps with trade. Being not a member of the EU, we were confused why there was no immigration upon our arrival from Germany. But after further research, it's because of an agreement between countries in the Schengen Area, comprosed of 29 countries, most in the EU but some not, where you can cross the border freely for a short stay.

The Norwegian language is a North Germanic language, also descended from Old Norse language and has the most similarities to Danish and Swedish. We find it to have a surprising number or similarities to English words. When we're shopping for food or trying to read signs, there are many words that we can figure out given some context. Of course, there are still many words that we have no idea of. But the good news for us, everyone here speaks English as well so getting around is really easy. There are a lot of visitors from the rest of Europe, so English is the common language people use to travel.

Day 3: Bergen to Odda

Today we had only a few hours of driving, so were able to sleep in a little bit after our late night. It didn't really get fully dark last night but the van has decent window shades to block out the light. We made breakfast in the morning and then got on the road. Our drive took us toward Odda and we used two car ferries along the way. Both times we just showed up and got in line, both times happened to be near the front of the line, and waited. The ferry runs every 30-40 minutes or so but we didn't try to time the schedule. We got on and paid (around $7) and everything went smoothly for the crossing. There are a lot of these ferries in Norway and it's just a way of life for people.
